Plagiarism Policy

1. Statement and Policy

Surya Teknika Journal applies a zero-tolerance policy towards plagiarism and establishes specific actions (penalties) when plagiarism is identified in an article submitted for publication.

  • Definition: Plagiarism involves the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work."

  • Policy: Papers must be original, unpublished, and not pending publication elsewhere. Any material taken verbatim from another source must be clearly identified as different from the original text by (1) indentation, (2) the use of quotation marks, and (3) clear identification of the source. Any text exceeding fair use standards (more than two or three sentences) or any graphic material reproduced from another source requires permission from the copyright holder and the original author(s), along with proper source identification (using IEEE citation style).

2. Author's Responsibility for Similarity Check

To ensure the originality of the submitted work, authors are strictly required to perform a similarity check using Turnitin, iThenticate, Mendeley, or any other recognized plagiarism detection software prior to submission. A similarity report showing a maximum similarity index of 20% must be uploaded along with the manuscript. Papers submitted without this report or with a similarity index exceeding 20% will be returned to the authors without scientific assessment.

3. Similarity Level and Editorial Actions

The Editorial Board of Surya Teknika Journal uses similarity reports to evaluate the originality of the manuscript and has established the following actions based on the similarity index:

  1. Similarity Index less than 20%: The article is accepted for the peer-review process. Minor citation improvements may be requested by the reviewers or editors.

  2. Similarity Index between 20% and 40%: The article is sent back to the author for major revision. Authors must provide correct citations for all places of similarity and perform proper paraphrasing. The author must resubmit the article with a new similarity report showing an index of less than 20%.

  3. Similarity Index above 40%: The article is immediately rejected due to poor citation and/or poor paraphrasing. No resubmission will be accepted.

4. Plagiarism, Similarity, and Paraphrasing

It is important to distinguish between plagiarism, similarity, and paraphrasing:

  • Similarity: Refers to matching text found by software, which can be caused by proper citations, common technical phrases, or the bibliography.

  • Plagiarism: The unethical act of presenting someone else's work as your own.

  • Paraphrasing: Rewriting the text in your own words while retaining the original meaning, which must still be accompanied by a proper IEEE citation.

The journal evaluates the context of the similarity report to determine if actual plagiarism has occurred.

5. Self-Plagiarism

This policy also applies to material reproduced from another publication by the same author(s). If an author uses text or figures that have previously been published, the corresponding paragraphs or figures must be identified, and the previous publication must be referenced properly using IEEE style. Permission to republish must be obtained from the copyright holder. For manuscripts originally published in conference proceedings and submitted to Surya Teknika Journal in an expanded form, the authors must identify the name and date of the conference proceedings and obtain permission to republish.

6. Dual or Redundant Submission

If an author submits a manuscript to Surya Teknika Journal with significant overlap with a manuscript submitted to another journal simultaneously, and this overlap is discovered during the review process or after publication, the editor of the other journal will be notified. The case will be treated as severe plagiarism, and the paper will be rejected. Significant overlap means the use of identical or almost identical figures and identical or slightly modified text for one-half or more of the paper.

7. Additional Information

Authors are fully responsible for the contents of the papers they submit, as they confirm the paper's originality statement and copyright transfer before submission. If a severe case of plagiarism by the same author(s) is identified, a decision on the measures to be enforced will be made by the Editorial Board. The author(s) may be forbidden to submit further articles to Surya Teknika Journal permanently.
